Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach the equivalent of five (5) courses per semester (fall and spring)
  • Develop and revise curricula
  • Advise ASLS students
  • College service (committee assignments, recruitment events, etc.)
  • Professional development (conferences, workshops, publications, etc.)
  • Serve as program manager for the Associate of Arts in American Sign Language Studies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Specification

  • Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in one of the following or a closely related field:
    • American Sign Language
    • Linguistics
    • Sign Language Studies
    • Sign Language Education
    • Interpreter Education
    • Deaf Education
    • Deaf Culture
  • One of the following credentials:
    • Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
    • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from RID
    • Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA)
    • Or an equivalent recognized certification
  • Preferred Education: Master’s degree in one of the following or a closely related field:
    • American Sign Language
    • Linguistics
    • Sign Language Studies
    • Sign Language Education
    • Interpreter Education
    • Deaf Education
    • Deaf Culture
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching American Sign Language at the college or university level.
