Adjunct Instructor: American Sign Language (ASL)

About the Role

The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of North Texas is seeking a part-time Adjunct Instructor to teach courses in American Sign Language (ASL) within our growing ASL program. This is an exciting time to join the program, which currently offers a full ASL language sequence and is launching a new Minor in ASL Interpreting Studies in Fall 2027. We are especially interested in candidates who are Deaf or hard of hearing and bring native or near-native fluency in ASL along with lived cultural expertise.

Responsibilities

• Teach one or more sections of undergraduate ASL courses, such as ASL I–IV, following the department's established curriculum and course objectives
• Deliver instruction primarily in ASL, fostering an immersive language-learning environment
• Assess student progress in receptive and expressive ASL skills through structured assignments, quizzes, and in-class evaluation
• Incorporate Deaf culture, community norms, and current events into instruction
• Hold regular office hours and respond to student communication in a timely manner
• Maintain accurate attendance and grade records using the university's learning management system
• Participate in occasional program meetings and curriculum discussions
• Uphold the program's classroom leadership principles, which emphasize student accountability, direct feedback, cultural immersion, and professional growth

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, Education, or a related field
• Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language
• Prior experience teaching ASL at the high school or college level
• Strong understanding of Deaf culture and community

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching in a college or university setting
• Familiarity with ASL teaching methodologies, such as ASL-only immersion approaches and curricula including Signing Naturally
• Connections to the local Deaf community and willingness to help connect students with community events and resources
• BEI Advanced certification or higher (if not Deaf)
