About the role

The Child Development Lab (CDL) within the Sanford School at ASU-Tempe is seeking a highly qualified, flexible, on-call Instructional Specialist, PRN, to join our team.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and support a developmentally appropriate curriculum and daily routines of young children enrolled in the Child Development Laboratory including, but not limited to: indoor/outdoor play opportunities, group activities, meal, and rest time.
  • Supervise children in assigned activity areas as well as assume supervision of the classroom in the absence of Associate Professional, Assistant Professional, or Intern.
  • Models and implements appropriate interactions for student workers and volunteers.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner by modeling appropriate language, behavior, and presence in accordance with established procedures, practices, and standards of the Teacher Manual for timeliness and readiness to interact with children and complete assigned tasks.
  • Practices interactions with children that are developmentally, culturally and individually appropriate by demonstrating respect for individual and cultural differences in children, families and staff.
  • Practices positive guidance techniques to assist children in developing self-regulation.
  • Maintain positive communication with children, families and staff.
  • Affords assistance in the implementation of age appropriate corrective measures/discipline as needed for management of classroom environment.
  • Affords assistance in the maintenance of a healthy and safe classroom environment (indoors and outdoors).
  • May be required to perform general housekeeping tasks such as laundry, snack preparation, toy washing, general cleaning and organizing environment.
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned by Associate Professionals, Assistant Professionals and the Child Development Manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Skills

  • Knowledge of early childhood developmental learning methodologies/models.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper administration of basic and emergency medical care.
  • Knowledge of games/activities suitable for young children.
  • Knowledge of early childhood curriculum guidelines.
  • Skill in working in an environment subject to noise, frequent exposure to contagious diseases, interruptions, and quickly changing priorities.
  • Skill in communicating courteously and professionally.
  • Skill in working with young children to help them complete activities and remain focused on assigned activities.
  • Skill in quickly responding to dynamic situations utilizing effective communication and appropriate intervention methods.
  • Skill in developing creative activities with limited resources and materials.
  • Ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
