Instructional Assistant Special Needs/Mobility (2 Positions)

About the Role

To assist a certificated teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students by performing a variety of instructional support and student care activities. This includes maintaining an effective learning environment and providing support in both academic and recreational settings.

Responsibilities

• Assist physically handicapped students with feeding needs, including lifting.
• Assist physically handicapped students with toileting needs, including stall positioning, lifting, garments, and cleansing.
• Supervise students to maintain an effective learning environment and note behavioral problems.
• Organize learning and instructional environments, set up materials for daily activities, and maintain neat and orderly classroom areas.
• Administer and correct daily assignments and homework.
• Establish and maintain informational and operational records and files.
• Assist in developing goals and objectives for each student according to curriculum and program requirements in conjunction with certificated staff.
• Confer with teachers regarding students' progress, program evaluation, problem areas, and assist in the development of lesson plans.
• Supervise students during lunch hours, travel, and recreation periods.
• Assist instructional personnel with mobility training activities.
• Instruct students in various learning situations, including basic academic subjects, vocational activities, self-help, and social integration.
• Implement learning situations such as individualized instruction, creating learning centers, and researching instructional programs.
• Prepare instructional materials for use in instructional activities, including making copies and gathering resource information.
• Provide feedback and information on students' progress through observation and daily contact, including performance time studies and data collection.
• Escort students to and from transportation pick-up/delivery points on campus.
• Assist teachers on field trips by helping students meet physical needs, providing supervision, and reinforcing learning situations.
• Monitor loading/unloading of students on/off buses.

Requirements

• Command of the English language.
• Knowledge of pertinent academic areas, learning situations, general needs, and behaviors of students, as well as student recreational activities.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions independently.
• Understand the needs of high school students and effectively relate to these needs in learning or recreational situations.
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Supervise students in various situations.
• Operate standard office equipment, including typewriters, copy machines, tape recorders, and projectors.
• Establish and maintain accurate classroom records and files.
• Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
• Ability to meet physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties, including lifting and assisting with toileting procedures.
• Completion of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by college-level courses.
• Proficiency in basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills, certified through one of the following:
  • Diploma from a regionally accredited California high school after January 1, 1981 (G.E.D. does not fulfill this requirement).
  • Proof of successful completion of the CBEST test.
  • Possession of a valid California teaching credential.
• This position may require the ability to speak, read, and write a specified foreign language.

A pre-placement medical assessment and a criminal history check will be required of the successful candidate prior to employment.

Pay

Starting salary: $2,755.02 (monthly).

Schedule

• Number of months: 9.4 (position begins as soon as possible).
• Daily working hours: 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (7 hours per day).
