Instructional Assistant Special Needs

About the role

The Instructional Assistant Special Needs provides support to the instructional program by assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self-contained classrooms. Responsibilities include implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, assisting with special needs (feeding, toileting, positioning, behavioral concerns), and attending IEP meetings.

This is a full-time position: six (6) hours per day, ten (10) months per year.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self-contained classrooms.
• Implement instructional plans and monitor student behavior during non-classroom time.
• Assist in meeting special needs, including feeding, toileting, positioning, and addressing behavioral concerns.
• Attend IEP meetings as required.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED).
• Two (2) years of experience working with children in an instructional setting is preferred.
• Must pass the Lynwood Unified School District Proficiency Assessment (Written Examination), demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Red Cross or authorized agency (required within 3 months of employment offer).
• Valid First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or authorized agency (required within 3 months of employment offer).
• Maintain up-to-date CPR and First Aid certifications during employment.

Examination Process

• Training & Experience Evaluation: Applicant materials competitively reviewed; candidates whose qualifications most closely meet District needs proceed (Pass/Fail).
• Written Examination: May include multiple steps administered on different days (100% of total score). Participation in all portions is mandatory and by invitation only.
