Instructional Assistant - Special Education, Special Assignment (One-on-One)

About the role

Provides support and assists in coordinating instructional programs relating to special education students and their Individual Education Plans (IEP).

Maintains an environment conducive to learning.

Responsibilities

  • Makes sure the classroom is a safe and healthy place for all students.
  • Aids teachers in planning and organizing lessons, ensuring materials are ready for each lesson.
  • Supports teachers in implementing students' behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assists in the use of assistive technology and augmentative communication devices in the classroom.
  • Compiles and maintains confidential records and reports.
  • Participates in staff development and professional growth.
  • Coordinates and assists with student transitions between classes.
  • Provides support for students with special health care needs, including personal hygiene, mobility, feeding, and adaptive equipment needs.
  • Applies CPI skills to assist students.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • For Title I schools: Six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education, or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) certification.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and successful instructional delivery methods.
  • Working knowledge of general classroom activities and routines.
  • Ability to protect confidentiality of personally identifiable information.
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to motivate students and recognize diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Clear and concise communication skills.
  • Positive disposition and ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to promote independence and self-determination for students.
  • Ability to perform medium physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently.

Schedule

Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends)

Workday must not exceed more than 40 hours per week and begins at least 30 minutes prior to the instructional day for students.
