Instructional Assistant Special Education - Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Overview

This Class must meet the requirements of the Federal and State examinations by passing proficiency exams for both sign language and for reading, writing and instructional support.

Qualifications or any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or upon passing a qualifying written examination, and experience working with deaf and hard of hearing students in an organized setting.

Incumbents assigned to this position are required to communicate fluently in sign language.

Essential Responsibilities

• Tutor individual or small groups of deaf and hard of hearing students and other Special Education students as assigned according to prescribed learning objectives, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher;
• Monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects;
• Aid in the implementation of Individual Education Plans and behavior management plans.

Skills and Expertise

• Skills and expertise in using and being able to use basic sign language;
• Skills and expertise in troubleshooting hearing aids, cochlear devices, and FM systems.
