Instructional Assistant - PreK Special Education
About the role
The Instructional Assistant-Preschool Special Education works under general supervision to assist a licensed classroom teacher in providing a variety of instructional, technical, and clerical support to students.
Responsibilities
- Follows all rules, policies, and procedures of Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) and state/federal regulations pertaining to special education services.
- Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of skills introduced by the teacher.
- Affords assistance in devising special strategies for reinforcing skills based on student individual needs, interests, and abilities.
- Affords assistance in implementing behavior intervention plans under the direction of the teacher and/or district staff.
- Affords assistance in creating and modifying instructional materials to match student abilities.
- Maintains a structured classroom environment by providing positive reinforcement or redirection, as necessary.
- May accompany students to special area classes or electives.
- Maintains the safety and well-being of students.
- Collaborates with the teacher to understand the needs of each student.
- Performs clerical duties, as needed; collects data under the direction of the teacher, develops and maintains classroom displays.
- Maintains confidentiality of student information.
- Participates in professional development and trainings to maintain knowledge base and obtain skills needed to work with special education students.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
This job operates in a classroom environment and requires sitting and standing throughout the day. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
