About the role

Ten-month full-time position at Hall Fletcher Elementary School to work closely with the teacher to provide support for the teacher in the instruction of students. The work is performed under the supervision of the teacher and/or principal.

Responsibilities

  • Support the teacher’s instructional plan and reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Provide group instruction, small-group reinforcement, and individualized instruction as directed by the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and class matters.
  • Serve in place of the teacher when requested by administration.
  • Prepare, organize, and employ instructional materials; develop lesson plans in conjunction with the teacher; determine how lesson plans and supplemental materials will be used in the classroom.
  • Distribute and collect instructional materials; organize classroom materials at the end of the day or period.
  • Perform clerical tasks as defined for the specific teaching assistant position.
  • Assist with student behavioral management as defined for the specific teaching assistant position.
  • Provide health management services and enter data in student health records as defined for the specific teaching assistant position.
  • Serve as a proctor during testing.
  • Attend workshops as requested by administration.
  • Score students’ papers as instructed by the teacher.
  • Check and report attendance.
  • File data according to regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, on playgrounds, on field trips, and in other locations to maintain safety and security.
  • Teach citizenship, social skills, and respect for others; reconcile minor student conflicts and discipline misbehavior through approved school and classroom teacher methods and policies; report discipline problems to the teacher or administration.
  • Obtain and maintain a North Carolina School Bus Driver’s License and drive a school bus when requested on a substitute or permanent basis.
  • Arrange, move, and stack classroom furnishings and equipment as necessary.
  • Prepare visual aids and duplicate materials.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Two- or four-year college degree or 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution of higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children and the core subjects at the assigned grade level.
  • Knowledge of Asheville City Schools laws, rules, regulations, and the Title I program.
  • Knowledge of expected behavior of children, including basic characteristics of ages and developmental stages.
  • Ability to make learning aids that strengthen lesson plans.
  • Ability to comprehend teacher-designed strategies and impart information at the child’s level of comprehension.
  • Ability to impartially and consistently apply proper methods of recognition, reward, and discipline.
  • Ability to independently solve most minor problems.
  • Craft skills to assist students with activities, assemble materials, and put up bulletin board displays.
  • Coordinating skills to schedule lesson plans, organize materials, maintain student records, develop remediation schedules, organize physical fitness records, and track students assigned to I.S.S.
  • Administrative skills to discipline students in the school.
  • Analytical skills to assist the teacher in student evaluations.
  • Communication skills to assist students in classrooms.
  • Leadership skills to motivate students toward positive behavior and help them set realistic goals.
  • Planning skills to implement instructional presentation of lesson plans.
  • Manual skills for general housekeeping in the classroom.
  • Mathematical skills to assist students with assignments.
  • Software/word processing skills to assist students in the computer lab and with classroom computer programs.
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift boxes up to 20 pounds.
  • Medium work demand classification.
