Purpose and Scope

The Instructional Aide under the general supervision of the classroom teacher will assist in the supervision and instruction of students. The Aide will help maintain a well-organized, smoothly functional class environment where students can benefit fully from the instructional program and available resources.

Essential Job Functions

  • Absorbs responsibility to assist the classroom teacher
  • Aids in supervision and care of students
  • Aids the teacher in classroom care-giving routines
  • Aids the teacher in maintaining a safe physical environment
  • Aids in supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and outdoor play
  • Aids in classroom set up, clean up, and materials preparation
  • Aids in arrangement, maintenance, cleanliness, and security of the classroom (including toys and equipment)
  • Aids in food service and supervises children at all meals
  • Receives food and sets up snacks/lunch
  • Maintains a clean environment for food service area
  • Establishes good rapport with children
  • Aids the teacher to work with individuals and groups of students
  • Utilizes respectful individual and responsive care-giving practices with students
  • Throughout class time actively engages children in meaningful learning activities and experiences
  • Appropriately assists children in bathroom procedures
  • Helps children establish good habits of toileting and personal hygiene
  • Aids in the implementation of health, emergency procedures, and first aid
  • Immediately reports witnessed accidents to supervisor
  • Prepares a written report stating date, time, nature of accident, and action taken
  • Attends meetings and in-services as required by Director
  • Willing to become more knowledgeable of effective and appropriate care-giving practices utilized in early childhood care
  • Communicates appropriately with parents and staff and refers all parent questions and concerns pertaining to students to the teacher
  • Aids parent volunteers helping in the classroom
  • Treats confidential information about students, staff, and school affairs in a professional and ethical manner
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative, supportive, and effective relationships with all school and parish personnel
  • Assumes the duties of the preschool teacher in the absence of the preschool teacher
  • Must be punctual and on time for work
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and demonstrates ability to be flexible and carries out duties

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Catholics must be willing to make a public profession of faith. Non-Catholic must be willing to sign the Diocese of Phoenix Division of Education and Evangelization Profession of Faith form
  • Aids with indoor and outdoor recreational activities
  • Effectively communicates with students, parents, and staff
  • Communicates in English at a level sufficient for successful job performance
  • Effectively supervises and cares for students in their play and routines
  • Mets the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be a high school graduate or GED
  • Must participate in Safe Environment (Called to Protect) Training and sign the Code of Ethics Policy
  • Fingerprinting and Tuberculin tests and any other requirements shall be obtained prior to employment according to the Arizona Department of Health Services, Diocese of Phoenix, and the Arizona State Dept. of Education
