About the role

To assist the classroom teacher in implementing a curriculum based on children's individual developmental needs in the context of a classroom community of learners.

Responsibilities

  • Work as an assistant teacher under the direction of the classroom teacher and principal.
  • Assist the classroom teacher with planning, developing, and providing a creative learning environment focused on high academic achievement, excellence in teaching, respect for differences, and collaborative relationships.
  • Aid in providing daily activities, integrating learning across the curriculum.
  • Assist in individual and small group activities.
  • Document pupil progress and prepare instructional materials.
  • Perform other duties as designated by the classroom teacher and principal.
  • Assist with recess supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, minimum of Associates degree, or 48 college credits.
  • Previous coursework in the education of elementary-grade children is preferred.
  • Previous successful classroom experience with students in an urban, multicultural setting, preferably at the elementary level.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and help children develop a positive self-image as successful learners.

  • Create opportunities for students to acquire, integrate, extend, and refine content, as well as use it meaningfully.
  • Review student work and assessment data to make informed decisions about instruction.
  • Intentionally close gaps in student learning and significantly increase student achievement.
