Instructional Aide - Elementary School (26-27)

About the Role

Under the direction of the School Leader or other certificated employee, the Instructional Aide will assist by performing a variety of instructional support duties to individual or small groups of students within the special education setting or regular classroom (both in an in-person classroom setting and virtually). These duties are designed to complement the instructional program to maximize the learning opportunity for inclusion students. The role also involves assisting in the establishment and implementation of appropriate classroom and school-wide behavior, as well as performing routine clerical tasks as assigned.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-a-week, non-exempt position based on a school-year calendar cycle, including scheduled school breaks and summer break. The role is paid over a 12-month period.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, work with students in small groups or one-to-one assignments to tutor, reinforce, or follow up on learning activities in core academic, language, and/or specialized subject areas (for both in-class instruction and distance learning).
• Assist in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment.
• Prepare and set up instructional materials and/or equipment for use in classroom activities; maintain instructional material and equipment.
• Assist classroom teachers in creating curriculum modifications for students.
• Provide testing accommodations, including supervising students completing tests in a separate location or during extended time.
• Review and correct student work assignments.
• Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans, which may involve approved positive reinforcement strategies, behavior modification, and other skills or knowledge to establish and maintain appropriate behaviors.
• Facilitate and support social interactions and foster the development of positive relationships between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
• Assist all students by modeling appropriate behavior and attitudes and providing emotional support and general guidance.
• Support students to be active participants on field trips and school assemblies or productions.
• Support students in community-based life skills activities such as using public transportation, shopping, and ordering food as directed by the Education Specialist.
• Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.
• Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

• Ability to learn and utilize instructional technology to support in-class and distance learning when needed (e.g., Zoom, Nearpod).
• Bilingual in languages that reflect student populations (preferred).

Qualifications

Experience: Paid or volunteer experience working with students or children in an academic or behavioral support setting.

Education: Title I paraprofessionals whose duties include instructional support must meet one of the following:

• High school diploma or the equivalent, and
• An A.A. degree, or
• A B.A. degree (or minimum 48 units in process), or
• Pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment (passing score = 460).

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate school and classroom settings. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment (1-20 lbs). Physical agility to move in various positions to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.

Mental: Ability to handle stress of deadlines and normal work standards, analyze problems, generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods, read, calculate, perform routine math, memorize, and recall objects and people.

Environmental: School and classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adherence to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00 per hour. This rate, coupled with an additional 60 days of school break pay, results in annualized pay that is, on average, significantly more than district peers.
