Institution Security Officer III, Campus Police
Location: Danvers/Lynn, MA – Full-time, benefited position within the AFSCME bargaining unit.
About the role
Ensure and maintain a secure campus environment by providing protection and security of persons, facilities, and property. Patrol campus buildings and adjacent areas, conduct surveillance, respond to violations and emergencies, and perform related duties as required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct staff meetings or briefing sessions.
- Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot; perform periodic security checks of buildings and grounds.
- Conduct surveillance, determine the extent of violations, notify appropriate authorities, and take necessary action.
- Handle or control emergency situations by administering first aid, summoning assistance, directing traffic, and participating in searches.
- Issue and account for supplies, tools, and equipment; maintain personnel records such as attendance, overtime, payroll, and leave records.
- Inspect firefighting and safety apparatus (e.g., fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, fire lanes, emergency exits).
- Respond to inquiries about travel routes, parking, and campus rules; provide information to students and the public.
- Screen individuals for identification, purpose of visit, or required authorization; participate in searches for missing persons or property.
- Operate two-way radios, base station address systems, and other telecommunication equipment.
- Lock/unlock doors and gates; direct or control traffic; raise/lower flags; assess road conditions for emergency snow removal or sanding.
- Maintain logs, journals, and records as required.
- Operate and monitor CCTV equipment, security systems, access control, and fire alarm systems.
- Serve as extra event staff for security and traffic direction.
- Provide security for dignitaries, witnesses, cash transporters, and others requiring personal protection; control crowds at public gatherings or demonstrations.
- Assist in evacuations during drills or emergencies.
- Operate the CJIS computer system and computer-aided record management system.
- Coordinate responses and support field staff during emergencies.
- Perform record-keeping and support services using office equipment (computers, copiers, fax, scanners).
This position is designated as an essential employee. In the event of campus closures or class cancellations due to adverse weather, essential personnel must work during the duration of the cancellation.
Schedule
2nd Shift: 2:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Campus location and exact schedule may vary due to AFSCME Unit Contract shift bidding.
Pay
Annual salary: $51,251.46 ($1,971.21 bi-weekly). Appointments from outside the bargaining unit start at step #1 of the range, as adjusted per the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Minimum of one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in protection or security of buildings, equipment, or people.
- Ability to gather information through observation, questioning, and record examination.
- Ability to operate two-way radios and prepare general reports.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and record information accurately.
- Ability to communicate effectively and speak clearly.
- Ability to maintain composure in stressful and emergency situations.
- Ability to understand, apply, and explain laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to lift heavy objects or persons.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods.
- Ability to enter data into College Police Dispatch and Report programs.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and email.
- Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to monitor and operate CCTV and alarm systems.
- Must pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check.
- Must possess a Massachusetts Class "D" or greater motor vehicle operator's license (or out-of-state equivalent) and present a driving history record from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
- Ability to pass a pre-placement physical.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in a career path toward becoming a sworn police officer for North Shore Community College.
- Previous security or equivalent military experience.
- Knowledge of electronic record management systems, CCTV systems, fire alarm systems, emergency notification systems, and access control systems.
- Knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word and email.
- Ability to be certified as a CJIS Level 1 operator.
- Ability to give precise, understandable oral instructions.
- Ability to collect information according to established protocols.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and adjust to changing priorities.
- Ability to multi-task in a busy environment.
