Job Summary
About the role
This entry-level position is for a trainee inspector who will eventually perform basic inspection and sampling work in the field, complete necessary paperwork, correctly distribute samples, and maintain timely communications with office staff.
Responsibilities
- Complete all necessary safety and orientation training required to access customer facilities
- Shadow assigned senior inspector or training person on jobs and learn basic inspection and sampling requirements
- Read, become familiar with, and follow all API and IFIA procedures as well as customer and company policies and requirements
- As assigned by training person, perform basic inspection and sampling work in the field according to industry and customer requirements, to include: physical measurement of product, obtaining temperatures of product, sampling of product and calculations of volume
- Carry out all assigned tasks in accordance with the latest industry standards and practices and in accordance with the specific instructions provided by supervisor
- Maintain required communications with office staff and keep them fully updated of any changes to the initial plan
- Prepare and distribute all field reports to vessels, terminals, and the office as assigned by training person
- Identify and transport samples obtained in the course of activities
Requirements
- High school diploma and/or related experience in the industry
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
- Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Familiarity with basic computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs
Skills
- Unrestricted use of a licensed and insured vehicle in good, safe operating condition
- Valid current driving license
- Ready to accept job assignments at any time, 24 x 7, including scheduled days off
- Willing to work overtime as required to meet the needs of the branch office
- Willing to work shifts if required by location
- Able to work in refineries, terminals, and on-board marine vessels as necessary
- Able to respond to communications from the office and be available at all times
- Attendance at monthly safety meetings required
- TWIC Card may be required to access terminals, refineries, rail yards, platforms, launch areas, and other third-party host sites
Qualifications
- Must have unrestricted use of a licensed and insured vehicle in good, safe operating condition
- Must have a valid current driving license
- Must meet the requirements of AmSpec Safe Driving Policy
- Must be willing to work shifts if required by location
- Must be able to work in refineries, tank farms, terminals, and on board barges, ships, railcars, and tank trucks
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to work in confined spaces (as defined by OSHA)
- Must be able to safely perform inspection work while wearing required safety equipment
- Must be able to stand for extended periods
- Must be able to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Must be able to talk or hear
- Must be able to smell
- Must be able to walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms frequently
- Must be able to climb storage tank ladders and stairs, typically up to 100 feet high while carrying 45 lb. of samples and/or inspection-related gear or equipment
- Must be able to work in the presence of odors, typical of petroleum or petrochemicals, without allergic reactions or nausea when such odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs)
- Must be able to work in confined spaces (as defined by OSHA), wearing appropriate respiratory and skin protection equipment
