Inspector III - Contracted Programs

Inspector III - Contracted Programs position within the Operations and Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department at the City of Colorado Springs.

About the Role

The Inspector III works with third-party inspection staff and testing agencies to inspect construction projects in the public right-of-way, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Responsibilities include inspecting ADA ramps, drainage systems, concrete, asphalt mill, and overlay work, coordinating with stakeholders, and addressing public concerns.

Work Location: Deke Miller Complex, 688 Geiger Court, Colorado Springs, CO 80915.

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction, replacement, and repair projects in the public right-of-way to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations.
• Collaborate with third-party inspection staff and testing agencies as a subject matter expert on asphalt and concrete placement to ensure work meets required specifications.
• Maintain oversight of all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pedestrian ramps to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.
• Review and interpret construction drawings and engineering plans; compare field work to design specifications.
• Analyze tests on soil aggregate, asphalt, and concrete for compliance with compaction densities and specifications outlined in City ordinances.
• Respond to inquiries and concerns from various entities and the general public; investigate and resolve issues.
• Coordinate concrete right-of-way repairs with the proper department; contact property owners as necessary; file related documentation for repairs.
• Oversee grading and erosion control to ensure conformance to City Engineering Standards and Specifications; respond to grading complaints and resolve conflicts.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
• Five years of full-time, professional experience in a related field.
• Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive civil engineering inspection program.
• Understanding of basic engineering designs and construction management.
• Familiarity with methods and techniques of concrete, asphalt, and materials testing and analysis.
• Awareness of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including ADA standards and requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, read and interpret blueprints, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

• Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions.
• Knowledge of ADA regulations and standards.
• Superior conflict resolution skills.
• Experience working in a municipal or government agency.
• Experience with civil infrastructure inspection in the public right-of-way, erosion control, and stormwater systems.
• Formal training or certification in materials testing, erosion control, or ADA compliance.

Pay

Hourly salary range: $33.91 - $40.71. Starting pay is determined based on years of experience and education. The City of Colorado Springs is an accredited pay equity employer.

Schedule

Full-time, classified position. Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
