Job Summary

About the role

This entry-level position is for a trainee inspector who will eventually perform basic inspection and sampling work in the field, complete necessary paperwork, distribute samples correctly, and maintain timely communications with office staff.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all necessary safety and orientation training to gain access to customer facilities
  • Shadow an assigned senior inspector or training person on jobs and learn basic inspection and sampling requirements
  • Read, become familiar with, and follow all API and IFIA procedures, as well as customer and company policies and requirements
  • As assigned by a training person, perform basic inspection and sampling work in the field according to industry and customer requirements, including: physical measurement of product, obtaining temperatures of product, sampling of product, and calculations of volume
  • Carry out all assigned tasks in accordance with the latest industry standards and practices and supervisor's instructions
  • Maintain required communications with office staff and keep them fully updated of any changes to the initial plan
  • Prepare and distribute all field reports to vessels, terminals, and the office as assigned by a training person
  • Transport samples obtained in the course of activities in a safe manner
  • Perform other similar tasks as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and related industry experience
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Familiarity with basic computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Unrestricted use of a licensed and insured vehicle in good condition suitable for both personal and sample transportation in all ambient weather conditions
  • Valid driver's license and meet AmSpec Safe Driving Policy requirements
  • Ready to accept job assignments at any time, 24x7, including scheduled days off
  • Willingness to work overtime as required to meet branch office needs
  • Willingness to work shifts if required by location
  • Ability to work in refineries, terminals, and on-board marine vessels as necessary
  • Availability to respond to communications from the office and be available at all times
  • Attendance at monthly safety meetings required
  • TWIC card may be required for access to terminals, refineries, rail yards, platforms, launch areas, and other third-party host sites

Qualifications

  • Skills: High school diploma and/or related experience in the industry, ability to read, write, and communicate in English, basic math skills, familiarity with basic computer skills, ability to work in various environments including refineries, terminals, and on-board marine vessels, ability to work in adverse weather conditions, ability to work in confined spaces, ability to work in the presence of odors, ability to pass a pulmonary fitness test, ability to pass an annual blood test for work in areas containing certain levels of hydrocarbon vapors, ability to pass a respirator fit test, ability to pass annual OSHA- designated blood tests
  • Physical Requirements: Safety-sensitive position requiring pre-employment, random, and annual drug and alcohol testing (including marijuana testing), compliance with AmSpec D&A Policy, ability to stand for extended periods, use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, talk or hear, and smell, ability to walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with hands and arms frequently, ability to climb storage tank ladders and stairs, typically up to 100 feet high while carrying 45 lbs. of samples and/or inspection-related gear or equipment, ability to climb vessel gangways, ladders, Jacob's ladders, and stairs, ability to work in the presence of odors, typical of petroleum or petrochemicals, without allergic reactions or nausea when such odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs), ability to work in confined spaces (as defined by OSHA), wearing appropriate respiratory and skin protection equipment, ability to work in all levels of adverse weather conditions, ability to work in local and on occasion long-distance travel
