About the role

The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances.

Responsibilities

  • Inspection of all aspects of residential construction for conformance with the City's building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and zoning requirements.
  • Inspection of swimming pools, utility connections to mobile homes, and periodic safety inspections of existing mobile home parks.
  • Ordering compliance when violations are discovered.
  • Working independently in the field and making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with a variety of adopted codes, city ordinances, and construction methods or problems.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience inspecting all aspects of residential construction for conformance with City building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning requirements (two years at the level of General Inspector I).
  • One of the following certifications: ICC Residential Building Inspector (B1), ICC Residential Electrical Inspector (E1), IAEI Electrical Inspector/General, ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1), IAPMO UPC Residential and Commercial Plumbing Inspector (P1), ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector (P1), ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner (79).

Qualifications

  • Documented completion of three years of building construction experience working at a skilled journey level in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry or related building trades, or certification by a model code agency as an Inspector or Plan Reviewer.
  • One of the following certifications: ICC Residential Building Inspector (B1), ICC Residential Electrical Inspector (E1).

Skills

  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Ability to provide an excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of International Residential Code (IRC).
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Salesforce, etc.).

Pay

  • General Inspector II Pay Range: $32.46 to $47.95 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $32.46 to $45.67 per hour.
  • General Inspector I Pay Range: $29.44 to $41.42 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $29.44 to $32.46 per hour.
