Inpatient Coding Specialist

Education / Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of American Health Information Management approved RHIT or RHIA course and/or completion of college level courses in anatomy and physiology and related science courses, preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years coding experience in an acute care setting preferred.

License / Certification

  • CCS, CIC required, or CPC with prior inpatient coding experience required.
  • If RHIA/RHIT certification, a CCS or CIC must be obtained within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skilled in the use of computers.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and schedules.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Position requires sitting for 90% of the workday and mobility 10% of the workday.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Frequent reaching, use of hands and repetitive action.
  • Requires occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Continuous visual acuity at close and distant range.
  • Inside protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • Minimal noise levels.
  • Much exposure to computer work.
  • Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock.
  • Some exposure to infectious disease while performing job-related tasks.
  • Some exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Occasional exposure to radiation.
