INMATE LAUNDRY AND PROPERTY CLERK - SHERIFF'S OFFICE (INTERMITTENT)

Under general supervision, maintains inmate property control and inventory systems; supervises a crew of inmates assigned to laundry duties within the Washoe County Regional Detention Center; and performs related duties as required. This is an intermittent hourly position and is not benefited.

About The Position

In addition to maintaining inmate property control, this position oversees a crew of inmate workers by hiring and firing when necessary; manages inmates’ schedules and days off based on their class program schedules; directly supervises and provides continuous training to inmates working in the Property/Laundry area to assist with daily tasks of cleaning and preparing laundry for exchanges.

  • Will be required to work on all shifts which includes days, swings, and graveyard.
  • Will be required to work holidays.
  • Cannot exceed 1039 hours in a fiscal year (roughly equivalent to 20 hours a week).
  • Not a benefited position (no holiday pay, PERS, or paid personal leave).

Ideal Candidate

  • Has the ability to multi-task, prioritize, organize their own workload, and work collaboratively as a team.
  • Is capable of using databases, word-processing, spreadsheets, copiers, and other computer software applications.
  • Has the ability to use sound judgement and maintain confidentiality.
  • Has good telephone and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Has the ability to train and provide technical supervision over inmate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of related training and experience that would provide the required entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Conditions of Employment

  • After the interview, top candidates must pass a background investigation which includes:
    • Submission of a complete set of fingerprints.
    • Completion and submission of a personal history statement.
    • Passing a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination.
  • Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
  • This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit.
  • “Intermittent hourly employee” means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an “on-call” basis.
  • Upon appointment, an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year.
  • Intermittent Hourly employees are “at will” employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
  • Retired PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to ensure they do not exceed the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits. PERS phone number is 775-687-4200 for yearly updates.
  • Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, or Susanville as of their first day of work.
