Job Description
Assist physician and RNs in the care of patients. Primary Key Performance Areas include safely and accurately mixing and administering chemotherapeutic agents, disposing of biohazardous waste, assisting in obtaining lab samples, performing technical laboratory procedures, documenting treatment, preparing superbills, educating patients, interacting with patients and families, handling telephone triage, managing inventory, entering patient charges, attending meetings, and complying with laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Safely and accurately mix and administer chemotherapeutic agents to patients as ordered by AON physicians, under the direct supervision of the registered professional nurse, and at the discretion of the head nurse.
- Adhere to ONS standards and guidelines.
- Accurately and safely dispose of biohazardous waste, per OSHA and HRS guidelines.
- Absorb and process lab samples.
- May perform technical laboratory procedures in a timely manner with accuracy and precision, meeting the standards of all accrediting/regulatory agencies.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Sending outside labs to appropriate facility as dictated by patient’s insurance plan.
- Maintain test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists according to all regulatory agencies.
- Responsible to perform Port Access procedures appropriately.
- Administer shots to patients after complete symptom assessment.
- Responsible for patient assessment.
- Document thoroughly and accurately in OncoEMR of treatment rendered to patients.
- Accurately prepare superbill to charge patient for services received in office.
- Ensure appropriate charges are captured by following guidelines for appropriate administration of all medications.
- Follow the AON I.D. policy and procedure with every patient encounter.
- When appropriate, educate patients and family about medications, side effects and planned treatment course.
- Interact with patient and family in a caring and professional manner.

- Telephone triage: Includes prioritizing incoming calls and messages from patients, family members, hospitals, nursing facilities, pharmacies and physician offices from emergent to non-urgent. Must respond accordingly in an appropriate time frame.
- Absorb and manage inventory and re-stock medical supplies, when called upon.
- Recommend purchase of new items as needed.
- Place stock in storage areas in a timely manner.
- Have working knowledge of dispensing medications via Nucleus. Able to perform cycle Nucleus count. Restock medications within appropriate time frame.
- Enters all appropriate patient charges into Nucleus.
- Meetings: Attend annual Safety / OSA training meetings. Attend all mandatory staff meetings as necessary.
- Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient and employee information at all times.
- Assist in training new employees to related job duties.
- Will be expected to work at any AON location to help meet AON business needs.
- Complies with all federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to patient privacy, patient’s rights, personnel law, safety, labor, and employment law.
- Adheres to AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan.
Qualifications
- Appropriate state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse with experience in IV therapy in clinic or hospital is preferred.
- If required within the state in which they work, an approved 30 hour IV certification course would be mandatory or successful completion of 30 hour IV certification course within 90 days of employment.
- Current CPR and BLS certification is required.
- Fluency in the English language as well as excellent oral and written communication skills is required.
- Valid driver’s license in the resident state to travel to clinics.
