Information Technology Technician

Structured cabling technicians install, maintain, and troubleshoot structured cabling systems in campus buildings, data centers, and telecommunications facilities, ensuring reliable transmission of data, voice, and video signals.

Responsibilities

• Plan, install, terminate, and test copper and fiber optic cabling systems, including horizontal cabling, backbone cabling, and patch panels, following industry standards for routing, dressing, and labeling.
• Use tools such as crimpers, punch-down tools, copper cable testers, fusion splicers, and OTDRs for cable termination and testing.
• Mount, rack, and connect network equipment (switches, routers, wireless access points, VOIP phones) with proper cable management, coordinating with technicians or engineers for placement.
• Conduct cable testing and certification using cable testers, analyzers, and optical power meters to verify performance parameters (attenuation, impedance, crosstalk, signal quality).
• Troubleshoot connectivity issues, signal loss, or other cabling problems; perform maintenance and replace faulty cables, connectors, or equipment.
• Maintain accurate records of installations, configurations, and test results; create/update technical documentation (diagrams, schematics, as-built drawings).
• Track physical port inventory with location and port-specific details in the department database.
• Provide detailed reports on completed work, including recommendations for improvements or upgrades.
• Adhere to safety guidelines and industry standards (TIA/EIA, ANSI/TIA, ISO/IEC); stay updated on emerging technologies.
• Collaborate with USNH Facilities project managers, network engineers, electricians, and contractors for project planning, material procurement, and scheduling.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; certifications or technical training in structured cabling are desirable.
• Knowledge of industry standards (TIA/EIA-568, ANSI/TIA-942, ISO/IEC 11801).
• Proficiency in terminating copper and fiber optic cables (RJ-45, LC, SC, ST, MPO connectors).
• Experience with cable testing tools (analyzers, OTDRs, power meters).
• Familiarity with network equipment (switches, routers, VOIP phones, wireless access points, patch panels).
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
• Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and time management skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Pay

$23.01 - $38.03 per hour. Actual offer based on skills, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
