About the role

Under general supervision, this position involves writing new and revised application and web-based programs, performing intake-gathering, application support, and troubleshooting tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Writes new and revised application and web-based programs.
  • Implements programming specifications.
  • Develops code and logic for defined specifications.
  • Works with third-party Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
  • Works with relevant web-based languages and protocols.
  • Assists in installing new or revised application software.
  • Prepares test data, tests, and debugs programs.
  • Assists in integration testing of new or revised software.
  • Documents program modules.
  • Performs intake-gathering related to new or revised programs, applications, APIs, and issue resolutions.
  • Resolves help desk calls related to program, application, and API issues.
  • Assists with supporting programs, applications, and APIs.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of current principles, practices, and procedures of computer programming.
  • Considerable knowledge of object-oriented programming languages.
  • Knowledge of installation, testing, and program integration techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant web-based languages and protocols.
  • Knowledge of legacy programming languages such as COBOL.
  • Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and perform routine programming tasks in logical sequence.
  • Ability to understand and analyze application and programming problems and assist in their solution.
  • Ability to program for relational database systems.
  • Ability to perform needs assessment and intake-gathering.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include one of the following:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a major in a computer field, including two (2) courses in programming (6 credits), and two years of satisfactory, paid experience performing applications and/or web-based programming for computers.
  • Four years of satisfactory, paid experience performing applications and/or web-based programming for computers, plus either:
    • An Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a major in a computer field, including two (2) courses in programming (6 credits); or
    • Completion of two years (60 credits) of education at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, including eighteen (18) credits in a computer field with two (2) courses in programming (6 credits).
  • Satisfactory, paid experience performing applications and/or web-based programming in excess of the minimum requirement can be substituted for college on a year-for-year basis. Each year of experience substitutes for thirty (30) college credits, including nine (9) credits in a computer field and three (3) credits in a course in programming.
