Information Security Analysts

Full-time, benefited position with the Utah Education Network (UEN) in Salt Lake City, UT. Hybrid schedule: Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM.

About the role

The Utah Education Network (UEN) keeps Utah’s K-12 schools connected through reliable, statewide internet service. In collaboration with the Utah Cyber Center, UEN is facilitating the Education Security Services program, which provides K-12 schools with cybersecurity resources, incident response support, and breach coordination services. As an Information Security Analyst, you’ll play a key role in protecting Utah’s education community by monitoring security systems for unauthorized users and identifying, reporting, and resolving security incidents.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, analyze, and maintain systems and procedures to safeguard internal information systems, networks, databases, and web-based security.
• Conduct vulnerability assessments and monitor systems, networks, databases, and web for potential breaches or intrusions.
• Install security measures and operate software to protect systems and information infrastructure, including firewalls and data encryption programs.
• Respond to alerts from information security tools, report, investigate, and resolve security incidents.
• Educate and communicate security requirements and procedures to all users and new employees.
• Recommend and implement changes to enhance systems security and prevent unauthorized access.
• Research security trends, new methods, and techniques used in unauthorized access of data to preemptively eliminate the possibility of system breaches.
• Ensure compliance with regulations and privacy laws; may oversee internal or external systems security (e.g., cloud services).
• Perform threat detection and threat hunting activities across large datasets from multiple sources.
• Handle incident response and coordinate incident response activities.
• Implement security controls across multiple organizations.
• Mentor other data security analysts.
• Develop incident response automations and workflows.
• Conduct state-wide training and security briefings for education organizations.
• Assist local education agencies in meeting minimum cybersecurity standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) plus directly related work experience, or a master’s degree (or equivalency) plus directly related work experience. The department may hire at one of the following levels based on experience:
  • Information Security Analyst, I (Entry-Level): Bachelor’s + 2 years of experience or master’s degree.
  • Information Security Analyst, II (Developing-Level): Bachelor’s + 4 years of experience or master’s + 2 years of experience.
  • Information Security Analyst, III (Career-Level): Bachelor’s + 6 years of experience or master’s + 4 years of experience.
• Solid understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and best practices.
• Familiarity with dynamic threat landscapes and their compensating controls.
• Demonstrated capability to analyze large datasets for security threats.
• Ability to communicate complex risks to stakeholders.
• Experience with systems administration for enterprise services.
• Ability to lead and mentor a team of data security analysts.
• Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of cybersecurity monitoring.
• Experience in planning and accomplishing goals.

Pay

Pay rate range: $60,000–$105,000 per year, depending on experience and job level.
