Informal Learning Spaces - University of Manitoba

In 2021, the University undertook an initiative to provide informal learning spaces throughout campus to accommodate a growing student population and create breakout spaces for student congregation. Flexibility and variety were key design strategies to support diverse student needs.

Project Overview

• Most informal learning spaces are situated along paths of travel, requiring careful consideration of egress and life safety by limiting loose furniture movement.
• Robust materials were specified to withstand daily student use and ensure durability.

Science Building Informal Learning Space

• Developed a series of banquettes, bar-height, and seated-height counters for perching and sitting.
• Integrated power and data into all components to support student needs.
• Included new lighting, flooring, and wall finishes to delineate the space from the corridor and building.

Library Vestibule Informal Learning Space

• Strategically designed to be accessible from service tunnels, the main library entrance, and the adjacent Faculty of Arts building.
• Stadium-style benching provides flexible seating, focusing, and gathering options.
• Fixed seating with cushions prevents loose furniture from obstructing paths of travel.
• Double-sided counter allows for perching on one side and seated use on the other.
• Wood wall panel system applied to the back wall and ceiling to define the space and create a focal point.
