Industrial Painter & Fabricator Multi-craft - Shop

Summary

Industrial Steel Painter who can also service when the need arises as a Steel Fabricator to support the fast-paced Maryville, TN fabrication facility. This role is responsible for preparing and applying protective coatings to structural steel and custom weldments. When not actively painting, this role will assist the fabrication shop team with metal preparation, fitting, grinding, and general fabrication duties to ensure production deadlines are met.

Primary Responsibilities: Coating & Painting

• Surface Preparation: Perform abrasive sandblasting, grinding, wire brushing, and chemical wash procedures to remove rust, mill scale, and contaminants from steel surfaces.
• Coating Application: Safely mix, measure, and apply various high-performance industrial coatings (epoxies, polyurethanes, zinc-rich primers, and enamels) using conventional, airless, and plural-component spray equipment, as well as brush and roller.
• Quality Assurance: Ensure correct paint film thickness (WFT/DFT) using wet and dry mil gauges. Inspect finished steel for holidays, runs, or overspray and execute necessary touch-ups.
• Equipment Maintenance: Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot paint pots, spray guns, hoses, and paint booths to ensure optimal performance.

Secondary Responsibilities: Steel Fabrication

• Metal Prep & Finishing: Grind, deburr, and polish raw steel edges, weld seams, and cutouts to prepare pieces for the paint booth.
• Fit-Up & Assembly: Assist shop fabricators and welders with positioning, aligning, clamping, and tacking structural steel components prior to final weld-out.
• Material Handling: Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging to move heavy steel beams and fabricated assemblies around the shop.
• General Shop Support: Operate fabrication machinery (e.g., ironworkers, saws, drill presses) and assist with general maintenance, organizing the shop floor, and managing inventory for paint and consumables.

Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 2–4 years of verifiable experience in industrial steel painting, sandblasting, and metal fabrication.
• Multi-Craft Competency: Demonstrated ability or willingness to cross-train and perform basic welding, grinding, and metal fitting.
• Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
• Safety Compliance: Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards, VOC requirements, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended amounts of time. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
