Industrial Electrician - (WWS Ops Division)

Broward County Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates for an Industrial Electrician position focused on water and wastewater systems.

About the role

Performs advanced journey-level electrician work in maintaining County facilities and industrial equipment, with a focus on live circuits up to 4160 volts. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Responsibilities

• Install and troubleshoot electrical motors, pumps, panels, disconnects, generators, variable frequency drives, soft starts, and programmable logic controllers.
• Troubleshoot three-phase electrical panels at 115V, 230V, 480V, and 4160V switchgear.
• Isolate and switch power to electrical load centers, including breakers, transformers, transfer switches, generators, and control panels.
• Interpret drawings and schematics for troubleshooting live and isolated electrical control circuits.
• Identify electrical hazards and use proper PPE as required.
• Perform electrical maintenance on plant equipment, including variable frequency drives, soft starts, and programmable logic controllers.
• Interact with management, staff, and the public to identify and resolve service needs.
• Determine materials, supplies, equipment, and time needed to complete assigned work.
• Install, repair, and maintain high-voltage industrial equipment, including motors up to 1000 HP, breakers, pumps, control panels, disconnect switches, and generators.
• Perform daily maintenance on live circuits (3-phase 480V standard, including 230V and 115V).
• Test, inspect, and switch 4160-volt switchgear.
• Install branch circuits, lighting fixtures, sound systems, generators, motors, and transformers.
• Repair relays, switches, control boxes, and equipment such as fans, copying machines, and communication devices.
• Replace defective ballasts, circuit breakers, control transformers, receptacles, and fuses.
• Troubleshoot electrical equipment/system problems to identify maintenance or repair needs and potential safety issues.
• Obtain materials, supplies, and equipment for assigned projects to ensure timely completion.
• Estimate materials, time, and resources needed for electrical work and projects.
• Perform routine electrical maintenance and repairs to ensure operational continuity and safety.
• Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical equipment to minimize emergencies and extend equipment life.
• Answer questions and identify service needs from the public and staff.

Requirements

• Four (4) years of experience in industrial electrical installation and maintenance, including one (1) year working with 4160 volts in an industrial environment.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License (Class E or higher), maintained for the duration of employment.
• Completion of an extensive ten (10) year work history verification and criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Airfield driving privileges for movement and non-movement areas (depending on assignment).
• Must undergo a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and Security Threat Assessment (STA) for a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, as required by the TSA.

Preferences

• Vocational/Technical or Associate’s Degree in electrical work.
• Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a related field.
• Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) Level I Certification.
• Vendor Certification in VFD installation, commissioning, or programming.
• Certification in SCADA/Allen Bradley PLC and I/O construction, commissioning, or programming.
• Experience calibrating, installing, commissioning, or programming differential pressure, magnetic flow meters, pressure, and sonic-level transmitters.
• Analytical instrumentation installation and maintenance experience.
• Broward County Master Electrician Certification above Journeyman level.
• At least two (2) years of experience in a water and wastewater operations environment.

Work Environment

Physical Demands: Performs medium work involving walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting regularly, exerting 20–50 pounds of force. Requires exceptional skill and speed in tasks involving close tolerances.
