Industrial Designer, Contract
About the role
Doris is a product design, engineering, and brand studio based in New York, with a dedicated team in Hong Kong. We design, engineer, source, and manufacture consumer products — four disciplines on one team, integrated from day one. We’ve launched 500+ products and won 12 design awards, working with startups, Fortune 100 companies, and heritage brands across hardware and electronics, appliances, cookware, soft goods, furniture, home accessories, and packaging. Design here starts with observation and research and ends with a product that can be tooled, made, and shipped.
We’re bringing on a contract industrial designer to lead design on multiple client programs, from brief to production handoff. Your main point-of-contact will be the Director of Industrial Design and you will interface with clients directly. You’ll also work alongside our engineering and sourcing teams in New York, Hong Kong, and China.
Responsibilities
- Own the design on assigned projects from concept through production handoff.
- Present work directly to clients, including C-level stakeholders.
- Design within existing brand guidelines and product ecosystems.
- Work with engineers on DFM, CMF, and tooling feedback when necessary.
- Deliver production-ready CAD, renderings, CMF specs, and design documentation against agreed program milestones.
Requirements
- 3+ years as a professional industrial designer, ideally at a consultancy or studio.
- Portfolio includes shipped products, not only concepts.
- Strong form skills grounded in function.
- Ability to ramp fast and work independently — productive in week one, not month two.
- Clear, confident presenter.
Skills
- Advanced proficiency in Rhino, Onshape, SolidWorks, KeyShot, and Photoshop.
Bonus points
- Direct experience with overseas suppliers and manufacturing partners.
- Studio experience that brings a different perspective to how we work.
Pay
$40 per hour, paid monthly.
Schedule
Up to 40 hours per week, schedule at your discretion, with availability during core studio hours for client reviews and team syncs.
