About the role

Amazon is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of innovative solutions in our world-class fulfillment centers and logistics systems. This role involves solving complex industry problems, designing and implementing groundbreaking solutions for automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. You will work in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment, leveraging strong technical problem-solving and project management skills.

In this role, you will collaborate with internal and external technical teams to define ambiguous problem statements, influence global teams, write technical specifications, evaluate equipment, develop business requirements, and manage large, high-visibility programs. Up to 50% travel is required, and candidates should live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the corporate office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Drive technical solutions for material handling equipment lifecycle challenges in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers.
  • Provide technical leadership and collaborate across multiple teams of engineers, serving as a key contributor between engineering teams, operations, and RME partners.
  • Coordinate efforts to develop optimal solutions and processes for the sortation and transportation network through process design, site layout, equipment specification, and intellectual property considerations.
  • Define highly ambiguous problem statements and develop technical specifications for equipment evaluation and deployment in collaboration with internal customers.
  • Generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions in short periods by working with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Understand business and technical requirements for product integration from mechanical, electrical, and controls functions.
  • Manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously while influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors, and vendors.
  • Evaluate solutions and make decisions balancing business value and technology risk.
  • Help teams make appropriate trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput expectations, quality requirements, efficiency, maintainability, and operability.
  • Identify standards and drive consistent application of engineering changes across North America.
  • Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center (FC) leadership and operations teams, including Industrial Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Process Engineering stakeholders.
  • Data mine and transform raw thoughts into clear technical documentation.
  • Travel up to 50% of the time to regional airports and site locations (a valid driver's license is required).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of project management experience, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, and critical path management.
  • Experience using business or technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.
  • Experience in Design/Innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related work.
  • Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics/process improvements to increase efficiency in forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, with a passion for delivering exceptional service.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions, evaluate outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience in ownership of projects, communicating timelines, and executing independently.
  • Up to 50% travel required; must have a valid driver's license due to project assignments in areas with limited public transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, system analysis, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision-making.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and VBA.
  • Master's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience working with and managing third-party vendors.

About the Team
