Indirect Tax Manager
About the role
Headquartered in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (SEA) is the U.S. Sales and Marketing subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. The Indirect Tax Manager reports directly to the Tax Director and is responsible for managing compliance filing responsibilities for SEA’s state and local tax returns, including sales & use tax, property tax, business licenses, annual reports, unclaimed property, and more.
This role oversees the interface between Vertex (sales tax engine) and SAP (ERP) platforms to determine multi-state jurisdictional taxability for products, warranties, services, and purchases. The Indirect Tax Manager also serves as a liaison between Vertex support and SAP teams in the U.S. and South Korea, and provides guidance to internal shared service departments on indirect tax matters.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and/or file returns for Sales & Use Tax (50 states and locals), Gross Receipts/CAT, Canada GST and HST, NYC Commercial Rent Tax, CA e-waste and CBE Fees, and other applicable taxes.
- Address areas of non-compliance and maintain the Vertex system to ensure accurate setup of customers, vendors, and products/services.
- Prepare support documentation for Sales & Use Tax and Property Tax audits.
- Prepare use tax accruals on Marketing Expenses, FOC (Free of Charge), and Donation/Gifts.
- Maintain and review resale certificates/tax exemptions in SAP Hybris and Sprinklr systems.
- Handle 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filing and reporting.
- Oversee and review unclaimed property filings managed by a third-party tax return provider.
- Coordinate and manage indirect tax registrations in new jurisdictions.
- Ensure compliance with state and local tax laws and assist with implementing new taxes/fees.
- Manage samsung.com and other eCommerce platforms to detect and resolve sales tax issues.
- Lead indirect tax planning and implementation for new company projects before “go live” dates.
- Drive continuous process improvement using tools like Alteryx and Artificial Intelligence software.
- Collaborate with internal business partners in Sales, Customer Service, AR/AP, and other departments on Vertex-related or business issues.
Requirements
- In-depth knowledge of indirect tax regulations, including U.S. sales and use tax and Canada GST/HST compliance.
- Proficiency in tax software and tools such as SAP, Vertex, Alteryx, Avalara, and MS Excel.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret complex tax data and provide actionable insights.
- Excellent communication skills to convey tax strategies and compliance issues to stakeholders.
- Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in tax reporting and documentation.
- Problem-solving skills to address and resolve indirect tax challenges proactively.
- Ability to stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations impacting the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A master’s degree or professional tax certification (e.g., CPA) is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in indirect tax compliance and planning, preferably in a managerial role.
