Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of sales & use, personal property, business license and Canadian Value Added Taxes for GEA’s North American legal entities.
- Manage indirect tax audits, including pulling necessary documents for auditors, researching various issues to ensure tax determinations are correct, and working with the auditor on sampling plans.
- Prepare and/or review sales & use, personal property, business license, Canadian VAT returns and amended returns. Prepare journal entries to account for accrued indirect taxes and corresponding tax filings.
- Maintain awareness of changes in indirect tax laws, regulations and court rulings for material jurisdictions.
- Review and prepare journal entries for return corrections, customer credits and intercompany invoicing transactions.
- Review and prepare various indirect tax accrual account reconciliations and maintain account balances in the general ledger.
- Continually develop taxation expertise and company knowledge.
- Research and provide recommendations on various indirect tax matters, including due diligence support for major transactions, impact on taxability of customers and vendor transactions, and review of complex contract/purchase order language.
- Monitor changes in indirect tax laws, regulations and court rulings for material jurisdictions.
- Participate in the Vertex implementation for all other legal entities, including the implementation, maintenance of taxing matrix, customer and vendor exemption setups, and system testing and review.
- Administer Vertex for the legal entities currently utilizing the system, ensuring rates are properly updated when new releases are available.
- Establish constructive relationships within the North America Finance team, Sales Administrators and Procurement.
- Work closely with the Director of Corporate Tax.
- Provide indirect tax expertise to assist others in understanding the tax scenarios around different types of business transactions.
- Identify tax changes and plan tax strategies in an efficient manner to reduce tax exposure.
Qualifications
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in accounting (strongly preferred) or Finance, demonstrating a working knowledge of indirect tax statutes and regulation. Masters in Tax/MBA a plus.
- Professional Knowledge and Experiences: 5+ years of progressive responsibility in accounting or tax, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in Indirect Taxation, including Sales & Use tax audits.
- Other Skills & Competences: Strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally, proficient in Microsoft Office, experience with SAP and Microsoft Dynamics a plus, ability to work independently, with minimal direction/supervision.
