About the role

A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development, as well as representing clients in tax disputes and developing new tax strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Researches and analyzes complex tax situations, prepares reports, and consults with DOT/DOR personnel.
  • Reviews and responds to state tax notices and provides support during examinations.
  • Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and documentation on various tax issues, and negotiates settlements and disclosures.
  • Uses tax software like GoSystems and research databases to complete tasks.
  • Provides technical client service to multi-state companies, drafts technical memoranda, and represents clients in tax controversies.
  • Prepares tax accrual workpapers, applies FAS 109 and FIN 48, and understands industry standards.
  • Develops new tax strategies, conducts studies, and assists with client acquisition.
  • Supervises and trains STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, and evaluates their performance.

Requirements

Eight or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation, with experience supervising tax professionals. Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships is preferred. CPA certification or relevant certification is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word, is essential. Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools is helpful.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field, with a Master's degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, superior analytical and research skills, solid organizational skills, and ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Capable of managing a team of tax professionals and delegating work assignments, building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, and encouraging a team environment.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as a primary contact on assigned engagements, and proven ability to interact with professionals at all levels.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax standards, application of tax laws, and cause/effect analysis for taxable conditions.

Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and firm policies.
  • Ability to prepare and review tax provisions.
  • Experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships.
  • CPA certification or relevant certification.
