Incident Responder (Multiple Positions)

About the role

The Oregon Department of Transportation is seeking multiple Incident Response Operations Specialists to join their team in Milwaukie. These roles involve patrolling the Portland metro area in a specialized emergency vehicle to assist with maintaining safe and efficient travel on Oregon roadways.

Responsibilities

• Provide minor road service assistance to motorists, clear disabled vehicles from travel lanes, and coordinate tow requirements.
• Identify traffic hazards, develop removal plans, coordinate safe expeditious hazard removal, and clear hazardous road conditions from travel lanes.
• Initiate and clear traffic obstructions and act as an on-scene commander at incident sites.
• Develop and implement emergency traffic controls that safely optimize traffic movement through or around the incident location.
• Prepare and process motorist assistance logs, incident reports, damage claims, and other documents required for incident investigations.
• Oversee removal of wreckage and debris and coordinate clean-up activities.
• Initiate emergency road closures caused by weather or other natural disasters and coordinate with the Transportation Management Operations Center and highway maintenance operations to restore safe conditions.
• Maintain equipment, shop facilities, vehicles, and tools in clean and serviceable condition.
• Participate as part of the team and establish and actively maintain professional working relationships with customers and coworkers.
• Work independently, outdoors in all weather and traffic conditions, and may require lifting up to 50 pounds.
• May require extended hours and being on call including nights and weekends due to emergency situations.

Requirements

• Two years of experience related to the duties of the position, with one year of this experience including public safety or transportation-related experience.
• You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. Pre-employment driving records checks will be conducted on the final candidate(s).
• This position requires a maximum 45-minute response time to 2440 SE Stubb St., Milwaukie, Oregon 97222 for emergency call-outs.

• Experience using tools to create a safe space for emergency responders during an incident.
• Experience working under tight timelines and frequently changing priorities.
• Experience working with the public in emotionally charged situations.

Pay

Comprehensive and equitable base salary offer within the listed range. Through an equal pay assessment, we will determine the salary offer using the information you provide in your submitted application materials. The salary range listed is the non-PERS monthly salary range. If you are already a participating PERS member or once you become PERS eligible, the salary range will increase by 6.95%.
