About the role

The Incarcerated Populations Epidemiologist position will gather and analyze data as part of a team designed to characterize the myriads of public health issues confronting people transitioning through prisons, adult detention centers, and juvenile detention centers. Incarcerated populations are disproportionately impacted by high rates of infectious disease (e.g., COVID-19, hepatitis C), poverty, violence, suicide, homelessness, substance use, and mental illness. They experience increased rates of acute and chronic illness and dramatically reduced life expectancy. Incarcerated populations are overrepresented by racial and ethnic minorities and individuals who have suffered adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).

Responsibilities

• Gather, manage, and analyze data from a variety of existing surveillance systems and other sources to describe incarcerated and justice involved populations in New Mexico.
• Access multiple public health and confinement databases, communicate with correctional and detention systems staff, and collaborate with agencies and organizations involved in the criminal justice system, including in-person collaboration and response within New Mexico's carceral facilities.
• Investigate outbreaks in confinement facilities, input data into the New Mexico Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NMEDSS), work with detention and corrections administrators, and generate public health reports that inform policy decisions at the departmental and legislative levels.
• Participate in infectious disease epidemiology day call by providing consultation statewide and within the IDEB through "on-call services" given via telephone to thousands of calls per year including investigation of reported infectious disease cases, clusters, and outbreaks of notifiable conditions.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Science, Social Sciences or Statistics.
• Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements

• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
• Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
• In-state and out-of-state travel, including occasional overnight stay is required.
• Candidate must be able to pass background check as required by state and local jurisdictions for admittance to carceral facilities to conduct surveillance, response and education work.
