About the role

State Farm is seeking a talented in-house counsel to join our Privacy and Information Security Unit (PISU) within the Corporate Law Department. In this role, you will provide legal guidance across a broad range of enterprise programs, including privacy, technology, information security, risk management, and compliance. You’ll be at the forefront of our digital transformation journey, working with AI and machine learning initiatives while managing regulatory, contractual, and reputational risks.

Our Law Department is more than a legal function—we are trusted business partners who help shape strategy, manage risk, and support one of America's most recognized brands. This position is based in our new Chicago satellite office in the West Loop and offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the majority of time spent on-site. Occasional travel to Corporate Headquarters in Bloomington may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance on federal and state privacy and information security laws, enterprise risk management, and compliance and ethics programs.
  • Counsel on related areas such as information retention, crisis management, AML/OFAC, business continuity, telematics, and technology-related matters.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to navigate the fast-changing landscape of law, technology, and business priorities.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state and membership in good standing of the bar.
  • If not already licensed in Illinois, must obtain an in-house limited license and submit an application to the Illinois Board of Admissions within 90 days of start date.
  • 7+ years of experience with privacy and/or information security laws, regulations, risk, and/or compliance programs.
  • Strong understanding of AI governance and data lifecycle risk management.
  • Proactive, continuous learning mindset in the evolving AI and cybersecurity regulatory landscape.
  • Current CIPP/US and/or CIPT Certifications is a significant plus.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, learning agility, and ability to excel in a collaborative environment.
  • Success in anticipating legal issues and enabling clients’ needs through practical, preventative law.
  • Eligibility to lawfully work in the U.S. immediately; employer will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work authorization.

Pay

Compensation is based on a standard 38:45-hour work week.

  • Potential starting salary range: $185,000.00 - $280,000.00 (high end limited to applicants with significant relevant experience).
  • Potential yearly incentive pay up to 30% of base salary.
