In-House Counsel

We are seeking an In-House Counsel with 2–3 years of corporate legal experience to join our legal team. In this role, you will provide practical legal guidance and counsel across a range of business and operational matters. Success requires sound judgment, curiosity, resourcefulness, practical problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. This is an excellent opportunity to take meaningful ownership and make an impact from day one, with potential to grow into a more senior in-house position over time.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a key advisor to internal business stakeholders and executive leadership on a broad range of compliance, risk management, contractual, operational, and business matters.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements and legal documents, such as contracts, regulations filings, and policy endorsement forms, to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
• Manage intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright filings and other portfolio matters.
• Manage outside counsel involvement on legal matters, including administrative appeals before the California Department of Insurance.
• Support internal quality assurance, governance, and continuous improvement initiatives across the WCIRB.
• Partner cross-functionally with executive leadership and business teams to support organizational objectives and initiatives.
• Monitor and advise on evolving legal and regulatory developments affecting the WCIRB and California’s workers’ compensation insurance system.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Active CA bar membership in good standing.
• Minimum of 2 years of legal experience, including experience in-house and/or at a law firm.
• Ability to identify and assess legal risk, develop practical business-oriented solutions, and implement effective risk mitigation strategies by synthesizing complex information and providing clear, well-reasoned guidance in collaboration with business partners.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Strong analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the insurance industry and/or workers’ compensation matters is a strong plus.
• Familiarity with regulatory and compliance issues related to insurance operations.

The successful candidate will reside in California and will work from our headquarters in San Francisco at least 40% of the time. Some travel, including air travel, may be required. Relocation costs will not be covered, and we are not able to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.
