In-House Counsel

Join the Workers Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California (WCIRB) as an In-House Counsel. This hybrid role is ideal for a proactive attorney with 2–3 years of corporate legal experience, offering the chance to provide impactful legal guidance and grow into a senior in-house position over time.

About the role

As a key member of our legal team, you will deliver practical legal counsel across business and operational matters, requiring sound judgment, curiosity, and strong collaboration with cross-functional teams. This position offers meaningful ownership from day one.

Responsibilities

• Advise internal business stakeholders and executive leadership on compliance, risk management, contractual, operational, and business matters.
• Draft, review, and negotiate agreements and legal documents (e.g., contracts, regulatory filings, policy endorsements) to ensure legal compliance.
• Manage intellectual property matters, including trademark and copyright filings and portfolio management.
• Oversee outside counsel on legal matters, including administrative appeals before the California Department of Insurance.
• Support internal quality assurance, governance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Partner with executive leadership and business teams to advance organizational objectives.
• Monitor and advise on evolving legal and regulatory developments affecting the WCIRB and California’s workers’ compensation system.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Active California bar membership in good standing.
• Minimum of 2 years of legal experience, preferably in-house or at a law firm.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Strong analytical, writing, and problem-solving abilities with sound judgment and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the insurance industry and/or workers’ compensation matters.
• Familiarity with regulatory and compliance issues related to insurance operations.
