In House Counsel
Responsibilities
- Oversee a portfolio of civil matters from initial assessment through final resolution, including contractor bond claims, bodily injury disputes, property damage cases, and related defense work.
- Analyze legal exposure, damages, and case risks to build strategic action plans that balance efficiency with favorable outcomes.
- Prepare and answer litigation documents such as complaints, motions, discovery materials, subpoenas, and other case filings.
- Research statutes, regulations, and case law, then translate findings into clear legal guidance on liability, damages, coverage, and compliance issues.
- Advocate for the company during hearings, case conferences, mediations, arbitrations, depositions, and other formal proceedings.
- Work closely with outside counsel, adjusters, investigators, consultants, and internal stakeholders to shape litigation strategy and evaluate resolution options.
- Lead settlement discussions and support alternative dispute resolution efforts aimed at resolving claims effectively.
- Track case activity, maintain timely status updates, and report on exposure assessments, strategy changes, and significant developments.
- Organize witnesses, exhibits, and evidentiary materials for trial preparation and participate in courtroom proceedings when required.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in California in good standing.
- At least 3 years of experience handling litigation matters.
- Background in insurance defense, bodily injury, property damage, construction disputes, commercial litigation, or similar areas is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated strength in legal writing, research, negotiation, analysis, and oral advocacy.
- Proven ability to manage a busy caseload independently while meeting competing deadlines.
- Experience appearing in court, taking or defending depositions, and participating in mediation proceedings.
- Familiarity with California contractor licensing laws and bond-related matters is a plus.
