Senior Helpers of Waxhaw-Monroe is an independently owned and operated franchisee specializing in compassionate, patient-centered in-home care for seniors, with particular expertise in dementia and memory care. Led by an Occupational Therapist with deep understanding of patient care, we are a team of Certified Dementia Practitioners committed to behavior management and dignity. We are locally owned, community-focused, and serve Union, Cabarrus, Stanly, and Rowan counties.

About the Role

Join Senior Helpers of Waxhaw-Monroe as a compassionate dementia care specialist and make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors in our community. This is NOT an entry-level position—we are seeking skilled professionals with proven dementia caregiving experience and fluency in Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Person-Centered Care:
  • Provide skilled companionship and emotional support, recognizing that dementia clients need patience, validation, and engagement—not correction
  • Engage in meaningful conversations and activities (reminiscence therapy, music, familiar hobbies, gardening, crafts)
  • Provide a calm, consistent presence that reduces anxiety and confusion
  • Recognize and respond to behavioral changes with empathy and trained techniques (not restraint or medication reliance)
• Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Support:
  • Assist with personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, and grooming while maintaining dignity
  • Support safe toileting and incontinence care
  • Help with meal preparation, feeding, and hydration monitoring
  • Provide mobility assistance and fall prevention support
  • Manage medication reminders (non-administration) and track adherence
• Behavioral & Safety Management:
  • Recognize early warning signs of agitation, wandering, or unsafe behavior
  • Use de-escalation techniques and environmental modifications (not physical restraint)
  • Identify triggers (hunger, fatigue, overstimulation, pain) and address root causes
  • Implement structured routines to reduce confusion and anxiety
  • Monitor for signs of physical discomfort or illness that may manifest as behavioral changes
  • Manage sundowning and other behavioral challenges with patience and technique
• Care Coordination:
  • Follow individualized care plans and provide accurate, timely updates to supervisors
  • Communicate changes in client condition, mood, or abilities to family and healthcare providers
  • Document care provided and behavioral observations in detail
  • Identify when professional medical attention is needed and alert appropriate parties
  • Collaborate with family members and other caregivers to ensure consistency

Requirements

• Required Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on home caregiving experience (personal care assistant, home health aide, caregiver, or similar role)
  • At least 1 year of specialized dementia or memory care experience
  • Proven experience assisting clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating
• Language Skills:
  • Fluent in Spanish (conversational and instructional ability)
  • Proficient in English (to document care and communicate with supervisors)
  • Bilingual preference for reading/writing to ensure care plan comprehension
• Dementia-Specific Skills:
  • Understanding of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory disorders
  • Experience with behavioral management techniques
  • Knowledge of person-centered care principles and validation therapy
  • Ability to recognize and respond to behavioral changes with patience and trained techniques
  • Familiarity with safety concerns specific to dementia (wandering, confusion, safety hazards)
• Core Competencies:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (calm, patient, empathetic tone)
  • Strong ability to follow care plans and provide detailed documentation
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with supervisors
  • Strong problem-solving and task prioritization skills
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license (mileage reimbursed)
  • Professional demeanor and commitment to confidentiality

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience with home care agencies or healthcare facilities
• Experience working with diverse populations and cultures
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Home Health Aide (HHA), or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) certification
• Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) or equivalent training
• First Aid/CPR certification
