About the role

The Attorney in the Impact Litigation Practice will work closely with the Director of Impact Litigation to identify, develop, and pursue litigation and legal strategies aimed at achieving systemic change. This role is responsible for supporting affirmative and defensive litigation that has the potential to create broad impact for SSR’s client population and the communities we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Director of Impact Litigation to develop and pursue creative litigation strategies designed to achieve systemic change.
  • Engaging in all stages of developing and litigating affirmative, complex civil rights cases in federal and state court, including:
    • Identifying patterns, recurring legal issues, and systemic barriers arising from SSR’s direct-services work.
    • Supporting case investigation, factual development, legal theory development, and litigation strategy.
    • Conducting legal research; drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, discovery, public records requests, and other litigation materials; delivering oral arguments; and conducting hearings, trials, and appeals.
    • Representing individual clients in affirmative or defensive litigation where the outcome may have a broader impact on SSR’s client population.
  • Collaborating with SSR attorneys, advocates, investigators, and other team members across practice areas to develop legal arguments and strategies for deployment by direct-services colleagues facing complex or frequently occurring issues.
  • Developing trainings, written resources, practice guides, or other tools to support SSR’s direct-services legal teams.
  • Leading or contributing to amicus efforts locally and nationally.
  • Analyzing and consulting on pending state legislation, policy proposals, or other legal developments that may impact SSR’s clients and communities.
  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with local and national advocacy organizations, law firms, community partners, and co-counsel.
  • Participating in internal practice meetings, case strategy discussions, and organizational efforts connected to SSR’s broader mission and values.
  • Maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics, confidentiality, and client-centered advocacy.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • To be eligible, applicants must have: J.D. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school. Membership in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar or eligibility for admission to the Oklahoma Bar.
  • Successful applicants will demonstrate: Excellent research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills. Familiarity with constitutional law, civil rights law, and/or complex litigation. Strong legal judgment and the ability to think creatively about litigation and systemic advocacy. Self-motivation, with the ability and desire to work both independently and under supervision. Ability and desire to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams. Commitment to client-centered, holistic, and trauma-informed advocacy. Enthusiasm and aptitude for working in and with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. Commitment to indigent defense, racial justice, gender justice, and systemic change.

Compensation

$74,000 annually (salary exempt), plus medical, dental, vision, life insurance, FSA, and a 401(k) with a 4% employer contribution. Generous PTO and a supportive supervision structure are provided to support sustainability in this work.
