Immigration & Citizenship Intern (Unpaid)

Responsibilities

  • Aid immigration staff in assisting refugees, asylees, and immigrants with various immigration benefits.
  • Accurately complete application forms for clients and meet with them to review and gather necessary information.
  • Follow up with clients regarding their applications and notify them of any matters related to their applications.
  • Assist clients with additional procedures such as requesting evidence and advocating with USCIS or local/federal political/legislative offices.
  • Conduct outreach mailings and assist the immigration team with tracking, filing, mailing relevant documents, applications, and notices.
  • Maintain up-to-date client data in an online immigration database.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A JD candidate or law student preferred; college students may be considered.
  • Familiarity with IRC's mission and willingness to represent it appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with clients.
  • Prior experience in immigration is a plus.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about immigration law and policy.
  • Understand refugee resettlement and refugee social services.
  • Develop research and outreach skills.
  • Gain experience interacting with multi-cultural and limited English speaking clients.
