About the Role
The Media Assistant, under the general direction of the principal and in collaboration with the media specialist, supports and promotes the vision and mission of School Library Media Programs. As a key member of the media center team, the Media Assistant helps create a warm and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the entire school community. This role involves working directly with students to aid instruction in information literacy, research skills, and access to library resources. The Media Assistant also manages the school-wide library media catalog and performs daily routine operations of the media center.
This position includes approximately 1.5 hours of recess support each day, supervising students and promoting a safe, positive recess experience.
Responsibilities
- Support daily operations of the media center and maintain an organized, welcoming learning environment.
- Assist students and staff with instruction in information literacy, research skills, and accessing online/library resources.
- Manage the school-wide library media catalog and perform routine media center duties.
- Provide work direction to student aides and parent volunteers, and assist in training new media assistants as needed.
- Supervise students during recess to ensure a safe and positive experience.
- Operate and troubleshoot computers, printers, copiers, and audiovisual equipment.
- Learn and apply current technology independently, and communicate this knowledge effectively to students and staff.
- Handle multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and move books, audiovisual equipment, and other objects weighing 25-30 lbs.
- Stooping, bending, and standing for extended periods of time.
- Occasional operation of keyboard devices for extended periods.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree preferred.
- Completion of 30 semester hours of college coursework and/or one year of experience working with children in instructional situations may substitute for an Associate’s degree.
- Experience using computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, and the Internet.
- Experience working or volunteering in a library environment preferred.
- Willingness to learn about current literature, library organization, and collection management.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and become proficient with library media center procedures.

Pay
The wage range for this position is $23.42 to $33.53 per hour, based on years of service.
Schedule
- Part-time: 5.5 hours per day, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM (with lunch at 12:45 PM).
- 10-month position (working months only).
- Shift: Day.
