About the role

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Responsibilities

Requirements

• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement
• Complete specific MCPS-provided courses (behavioral management, nonviolent crisis interventions) for teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models
• Support behavioral interventions as required

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment required. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered. Must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education; certification in a content area is desirable.

Skills

• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range and MCPS special education program
• Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments
• Thorough knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math (if seeking an elementary position)
• Knowledge of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 20
