About the Role
Under direction, this position has immediate responsibility for the management of the school plant, building operations, and property and grounds. The role involves ensuring prescribed sanitary, safety, and operating standards, as well as security of the school plant. General and special instructions are received from the school principal or designee, with technical supervision and guidance provided by the area building services supervisor.
Responsibilities may vary depending on the size of the plant, number of building service workers, and presence of a plant equipment operator. In larger schools, the manager focuses more on supervision of the building service staff and less on direct performance of duties. Employees in this role are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.
Responsibilities
- Maintain sanitary, safety, and operating standards for the school plant.
- Supervise and inspect the work of building service staff.
- Operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment, including automatic scrubbers, burnishers, snow blowers, and hydraulic lifts.
- Use personal protective equipment and follow safety tools and practices.
- Manage human and material resources to ensure a safe environment.
- Operate and maintain central heating plants, including making minor adjustments and service repairs.
- Follow emergency response procedures, including code red/blue, fire code regulations, and inclement weather protocols.
- Train, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Maintain records of time, materials, and routine reports.
- Utilize computer technology to order supplies, process maintenance work orders, and communicate with administrators and staff.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Requirements
- High School or GED diploma required.
- Experience in general cleaning of buildings and grounds.
- Possession of a current and valid boiler certificate and stationary engineer’s license (preferred).
- Completion of the MCPS Building Manager Test at the required score.
- Sufficient physical strength and freedom from disabling defects to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and perform manual labor.
- Must be available for frequent overtime or night work, and report to buildings during inclement weather or emergencies.
- Must provide and maintain a current working telephone number for emergency contact.
- Must wear provided uniforms and proper attire.
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of methods, materials, and practices used in building service work.
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient procedures for operating central heating plants.
- Advanced knowledge of emergency response procedures.
- Ability to train, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Proficiency in maintaining records and preparing routine reports.
- Ability to utilize computer technology for ordering supplies, processing work orders, and communication.
- Strong human relations and communication skills.
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $24.38 and $35.02 per hour, based on years of service.
