About the role
The III-V semiconductor group at NLR is seeking an intern to contribute to the development of large area semiconductor processing and characterization as part of DOE’s METALLIC initiative.
Responsibilities
- Assist in processing and characterizing III-V semiconductor materials and devices, including solar cells.
- Implement cleanroom processing of electronic devices including, lithography, metal deposition, and chemical etching.
- Use characterization techniques such as X-ray, microscopy, current-voltage, and optical probing to determine material and device quality.
- Gain significant experience in device processing and characterization while supporting the III-V team's research goals.
Requirements
- Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
- Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months.
- Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
- Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
- Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months.
- Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Qualifications
- Cleanroom processing experience including lithography and chemical etching.
- Experience in characterizing semiconductor materials and devices using, for example, x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, luminescence techniques, current voltage measurements, or device-specific characterization.

Pay
$44,500 - $71,200 annually
Schedule
Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
