Identity Management Specialist

About the role

The Identity Management Specialist reports to the Manager, Identity and Access Management Support (IAMS) within the Secure Identity Services (SIS) department of the Division of Information Technology. The specialist provides service to the Virginia Tech community by facilitating identity and access needs, protecting university and user data through correct authentication and authorization for end‑users and services. The role follows University and IT policies to grant access based on users’ attributes, affiliations, and roles.

Responsibilities

• Perform password resets and troubleshoot user access issues.
• Validate and verify authorization requests.
• Facilitate approval workflows for access provisioning.
• Provision and de‑provision user accounts and entitlements.
• Contribute to functional requirements for IAMS business processes and administrative tools.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with Identity Management concepts and processes, including authorization, authentication, and segregation of duties.
• Knowledge of access control systems such as Oracle Databases, Active Directory, Exchange, LDAP, etc.
• Experience using an ITSM tool (e.g., ServiceNow).
• Demonstrated discretion handling confidential or personal data.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and conceptual skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Experience with business processes and applications supporting higher education.
• Experience with ERP support, especially application security and user management.
• Experience writing and executing SQL queries.

Pay

Pay Band 4; Salary range $50,000 – $63,000.

Schedule

Non‑Exempt: Eligible for overtime. 40 hours per week.
