About the Role

Provides quality patient care to critically ill patients through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation. Serves as a patient advocate at all times. Supervises the nursing care provided to each patient by other caregivers. Develops the plan for nursing care in coordination with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team to promote positive clinical outcomes. Ensures patient education and participates in discharge planning.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the standard of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and the nursing department.
  • Assesses the patient on admission within the required time frame and makes referrals to other disciplines such as rehabilitation and nutritional services.
  • Develops and updates a nursing care plan for assigned patients, ensuring it is discussed and coordinated with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.
  • Manages restraints, ensuring proper positioning and alignment of patients.
  • Documents patient admission assessment, reassessments, care plans, and other pertinent information in the electronic medical record.
  • Demonstrates correct use of biomedical equipment (e.g., defibrillator, suction machine, IV and feeding pumps, PCA pump, blood glucose monitoring machine).
  • Delivers safe and effective patient care, completing assignments on time and demonstrating initiative and teamwork.
  • Obtains consents for procedures and blood transfusions, ensuring patients have necessary information for informed decisions.
  • Receives, transcribes, and ensures accurate entry and execution of physician’s orders.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to changes in patient condition (e.g., cardiac rhythm, respiratory distress, GI bleed, diabetic ketoacidosis, adverse drug reactions, blood transfusion reactions). Institutes emergency actions, notifies physicians, and obtains orders.
  • Administers medications with knowledge of actions, side effects, correct dosages, and routes according to ICU policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize and institute arrhythmia protocols for cardiac rhythms (e.g., V-tach, V-fib, PVCs, asystole, heart blocks, atrial fibrillation/flutter).
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
  • Administers medications utilizing the seven “rights” of medication administration: right patient, route, time, medication, dose, reason, and documentation.
  • Assists physicians with special tests and procedures (e.g., thoracentesis, paracentesis, arterial line insertion, bronchoscopy).
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • Assists in orientation of new personnel and performance evaluations of nursing staff.
  • Coordinates nursing care for patients scheduled for therapy or procedures by other departments.
  • Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments (e.g., cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, sepsis).
  • Participates in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Applies therapeutic interventions based on knowledge of emotional and rehabilitative aspects of care.
  • Provides lifesaving first aid and makes appropriate referrals using current ACLS certification and protocols.
  • Manages various tubes and devices (e.g., Foley/straight catheters, feeding tubes, chest tubes, JP drains, Hemovacs, T-tubes, wound drains, ostomy care, suprapubic catheters, continuous bladder irrigation).
  • Demonstrates correct setup and monitoring of hemodynamic systems (e.g., Swan-Ganz catheter, arterial catheter, cardiac output).
  • Interprets critical lab values, reports and documents appropriately.
  • Verifies correct lead telemetry placement, validates telemetry strips every 4 hours and as needed, and documents findings.
  • Participates in assessing and meeting patient and family education needs.
  • Provides complete patient reports to oncoming RNs, ensures documentation is complete, and maintains orderly patient rooms.
  • Communicates pertinent information to RNs, physicians, and patients as needed.
  • Adheres to dress code, maintains neat and clean appearance, and wears appropriate identification while on duty.
  • Completes annual health, safety, and education requirements and maintains professional growth and development.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and employee information.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles to provide age-appropriate care.
  • Attends mandatory in-services and staff meetings.
  • Represents the organization positively and professionally.
  • Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital and department.
  • Maintains current licensure/certification for the position.
  • Demonstrates guest relations skills with patients, physicians, visitors, employees, and others.
  • Follows departmental and hospital health, safety, security, and hazardous materials policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Current State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Facility-Specified).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (Facility-Specified).
  • Minimum one year of training and experience in Critical Care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and function under stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
  • Good and regular attendance.
