About the Role

Peer Support Specialists/Recovery Mentors are a critical part of behavioral health treatment teams, supporting and assisting clients with co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance use disorders) who are attempting to engage in recovery or are in early stages of recovery. The ICOD Peer Support Specialist/Recovery Mentor works with their supervisor to design and implement recovery support for clients, providing ongoing assistance, education pursuits, community connections, transportation, and other supportive services. They help facilitate classes, support groups, and group activities while maintaining a personal recovery program, if applicable, and modeling recovery-appropriate behavior.

Responsibilities

• Provides peer support and recovery coaching to clients through regular telephone contact, including support for those prone to relapse, reminder calls for scheduled services, and outreach to clients who miss appointments.
• Provides client transportation (when approved by supervisor) to behavioral health appointments, detox or residential treatment, and other relevant services.
• Offers peer support and recovery coaching during activities, including limited home visits with supervisor approval.
• Attends sober support meetings, wellness activities, or other community events with clients.
• Monitors and stays connected to clients in higher levels of care (e.g., residential treatment, psychiatric hospitalizations) to assist with reengagement upon discharge.
• Takes individuals or groups of clients to wellness activities, NAMI, 12-Step meetings, or clean and sober activities (e.g., Wellbriety/White Bison).
• Provides case management services, including referrals to resources such as food banks, primary care, education, and housing.
• Assists with prep and clean-up for evening groups as needed.
• Provides individual, couples, and family support.
• Assists clinicians in groups at the office, jail, or other settings, including back-up support for treatment activities.
• Helps clients develop and connect to non-using recovery activities and wellness activities that promote mental health.
• Maintains case notes of client contact within agency documentation timelines in the electronic health record system (EHR).
• Assists with UA drug testing if needed.
• Completes attendance sheets, required report forms, and reports client participation to the supervisor.

• Complies with Code of Conduct, Business Ethics, Employee Handbook, and all relevant policies and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, 42 CFR, Oregon statutes).
• Completes assigned training and attends seminars or educational opportunities to develop professional skills.
• Maintains required certifications and licenses, including CPR and First Aid.
• Works independently and collaboratively as a positive team member.

Requirements

• High School Diploma (or equivalent).
• Personal lived experience with co-occurring disorders, including recovery from substance use and mental illness.
• Minimum of 2 years of continuous recovery, including 2 years of sobriety/clean time from substance use and 2 years of mental health stability.
• One or both of the following certifications at the time of hire:
  • Peer Support Specialist-Traditional Health Worker through the Oregon Health Authority; and/or
  • Certified Recovery Mentor-I (CRM) through MHACBO.
• If only one certification is held at hire, must be eligible to obtain the other (CRM or PSS-THW).
• Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability and commitment to obtain within 60 days of hiring.
• Valid Oregon Driver License (or ability to obtain one upon hire) and insurable under the organization’s auto liability coverage policy (minimum 21 years of age, with no Type A violations in the past 3 years or three or more Type B violations).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual in English/Spanish.
• Previous training, experience, or knowledge of treatment in the disease of addiction.
