Position Summary

The Ice Cream Supervisor will oversee daily operations of our novelty ice cream production lines, ensuring efficient, safe, and high-quality manufacturing. This role is pivotal in managing staff, coordinating production schedules, and maintaining compliance with food safety standards. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with extruded novelties, automated packaging systems, and dairy-based product lines. Experience with a start-up is a plus.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Performance Responsibilities

Production Oversight

  • Supervise all stages of ice cream production including mixing, aging, freezing, filling, and packaging.
  • Monitor novelty product lines (e.g., extruded novelties, stick products) for quality and consistency.
  • Cook with R&D and QA teams to implement new flavors and product improvements.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, train, and mentor production staff to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support employee development.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Quality & Compliance

  • Enforce food safety protocols (HACCP, SQF, FDA) and conduct regular audits.
  • Ensure all products meet internal and regulatory quality standards.
  • Address deviations and implement corrective actions promptly.

Clean-In-Place (CIP)

  • Oversee and ensure execution of Clean-in-Place (CIP) processes for mix systems, pasteurizers, freezers, and filling equipment to support sanitation and production readiness.
  • Ensure effective cleaning during product and allergen changeovers, verifying compliance with food safety standards, chemical concentrations, and sanitation procedures.
  • Collaborate with sanitation, quality, and maintenance teams to troubleshoot CIP issues, maintain documentation, and drive continuous improvement in cleaning effectiveness and efficiency.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of high-speed production equipment.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.

Inventory & Logistics

  • Manage raw material and finished goods inventory.
  • Collaborate with logistics to ensure timely distribution and delivery.

Reporting & Metrics

  • Track production KPIs including yield, downtime, and labor efficiency.
  • Prepare daily and weekly reports for plant leadership.

Position Specifications/Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Engineering, or related field preferred. 3+ years of supervisory experience in food manufacturing, preferably dairy or frozen desserts.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proficient in or knowledgeable of using a variety of computer software applications, especially Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and CMMS software. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective prioritizing, organizing, and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others. Demonstrated ability to be flexible, execute plans, strategies, and achieve desired results. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve defined goals on time. Experience solving problems, analyzing information, highlighting relevant information, and suggesting appropriate actions. Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands, and can deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Identifies and resolves problems promptly and gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Familiarity with automated systems and novelty ice cream equipment. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of GMP, HACCP, and other food safety standards.
  • Physical Requirements: Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to regularly perform heavy physical work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions. Excessive ascending and descending of ladders and stairs using feet and legs and hands and arms regularly. Body agility is emphasized. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances continuously. Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and fingers continuously. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist regularly. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to rest on the knee or knees. Crouching: Regularly bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine continuously. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word. Includes activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. Lifting: Able to lift, up to 100lbs occasionally, up to 50lbs regularly.
  • Working Conditions: Subject to all environmental conditions, inside and outside. Subject to extreme heat and cold: Temperatures above 100 degrees and below freezing occasionally. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level. Subject up to at least 92db’s.
