IC&E Technician (Carlsbad, NM)

About the Role

An IC&E Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation and control devices/electrical systems on remote facilities in the Permian Basin. The Permian is the most prolific oil and gas basin in America, providing about 40% of U.S. oil and 15% of gas production. The merger of ExxonMobil and Pioneer creates an Unconventional business with the largest, high-return development potential in the Permian Basin, encompassing over 1.4 million net acres with an estimated 16 billion barrels of oil equivalent resource. In 2023, ExxonMobil produced an average of 612,000 barrels per day in the Permian, with a goal to reach 1 million barrels per day by the end of 2027. This role supports the Basin’s net zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions target by 2030.

Responsibilities

• Ensure operations sites are maintained safely using PSMS (Process Safety Management System) and PTW (Permit to Work) processes.
• Troubleshoot and repair all plant instrumentation and control/electrical systems, including PLCs, transmitters, control wiring, MCCs, soft starters, VFDs, and more.
• Troubleshoot and repair control/communication networks within the plant (Ethernet I/P, network switches, fiber optics, Ethernet, and serial radio networks).
• Maintain and repair a variety of pump motors, compressor motors, fan motors, generators, and other rotating and fixed equipment.
• Work safely around instrumentation and electrical systems in various outdoor weather conditions.
• Perform duties with minimal supervision, including planning, scheduling, record-keeping, and troubleshooting using computer systems.

Requirements

• Willingness to work overtime when necessary.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in extreme outdoor temperatures.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with personnel, departments, and management.
• Basic knowledge of plant operations, process flow, and component purposes.
• Computer skills for planning, scheduling, record-keeping, regulations, and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years of experience as an IC&E Technician or an Associate’s Degree in Instrumentation, Controls, or Electrical Systems.
• 2+ years of formal or industry experience in the oil/gas field.
• NM Journeyman’s license (a plus but not mandatory).
• Experience with Fisher ROC, Allen Bradley PLC/Rockwell Automation, and Delta V DCS systems.
• Experience with wired and wireless Rosemount pressure transmitters, guided wave radars, DP level, level switches, gateways, and temperature transmitters.
• Knowledge of control valves, positioners, control loops, and Ethernet/serial radio networks.
• Solid understanding of low and medium voltage electrical equipment such as switchgear, VFDs, lighting contactors, and 24V DC control circuits.
