Hydromill/Hydrofraise Operator

Summary

Able to direct the operation of the crew assigned to his equipment. Operates Hydromill / Hydrofraise trench cutters to excavate slurry-supported trenches to required depth, verticality and alignment. Monitors and adjusts key operational parameters (torque, slurry flow, cutter position, cutter rotation speed, penetration rate).

Responsibilities

• Monitors and adjusts key operational parameters (torque, slurry flow, cutter position, cutter rotation speed, penetration rate)
• Coordinates with slurry plant technicians and other teams to maintain excavation in a safe manner and meet quality standards of the company
• Informs Superintendent or site mechanic of malfunctioning equipment or equipment related problems
• Ensures that all Nicholson and OSHA safety regulations are followed and enforced; responsible for safety on site
• Attends and participates at safety meetings
• Maintains daily logs, equipment inspection forms and excavation records
• Ensures that the work performed is built to the plans, specifications and the level of quality expected of Nicholson

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• OSHA 10-hour Crane Certification (NCCCO or equivalent) preferred
• Minimum of 3 years of construction experience, 2 years of which must have been as a Hydromill/ Hydrofraise or similar trench cutter equipment excavating slurry wall trenches
• Experience operating crawler cranes is required
• Experience on diaphragm wall and deep foundation projects is required
• Proven ability to operate Hydromill / Hydrofraise equipment safely and efficiently
• Understanding of slurry wall excavation techniques, slurry usage, and verticality control
• Understanding of trench-cutter technology, slurry circulation systems, real-time verticality control systems, and rock/soil excavation mechanics
• Thorough understanding of lifting operations and hoisting safety
• Ability to troubleshoot hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems under field conditions
• Ability to read and understand excavation plans

Qualifications & Requirements

• Physical Requirements: Reaching high and low, stooping, and bending continually, lifting/carrying/moving up to 100 pounds continually, able to travel per the Nicholson travel policy, requires a high degree of concentration in a busy and noisy construction environment, requires working in all types of weather
• Mental Requirements: Converse effectively using both verbal and written communication, makes decisions and assumes accountability, concentrates on tasks, demonstrates ability to manage stress and emotions as related to the workplace, identifies and resolves conflict, assesses safety and risk
